I thought I would write a list of must-have/must-do items for national emergencies such as a natural disasters.
Water
Remember water equals life. You will need clean water primarily for keeping yourself hydrated and secondarily for hygiene. If you run out of water I recommend collecting rain water ahead of time and boiling it then running it through a filter.
Power
Having power will make your life a lot more easier during natural disasters. You can prepare for long periods of outages by buying solar power kits or a generator or both. Stock up on batteries and fuel for the generator, cooking, lanterns, etc.
Food
Stock up on canned foods. Pay particular attention to calories as the average person should have approximately 2000-calories per day. This will help you estimate how long your food supply will last. If the environment permits it, it's also a good idea to grow a vegetable garden ahead of time in case you run low on food. I suggest having one garden row approximately 10-12 feet long per person per week. Potatoes, tomatoes, beans, and carrots take approximately 60-90 days to grow.

Thousands of mourners have attended a state funeral for victims of Italy's worst earthquake in over 30 years, which killed 289 people and left 28,000 homeless.
Grieving relatives and friends prayed before 205 coffins in the mountain city of L'Aquila, the worst hit town by Monday's 6.3 magnitude quake.
Officials declared Friday a national day of mourning, with flags flying at half mast, shops lowering their shutters and flights were stopped at airports for one minute's silence.
Pope Benedict XVI, delivered a message on his behalf at a Good Friday mass and told survivors to keep up hope.
"This is the time to work together,'' Benedict said in a message read by Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, his secretary.

There are many wildfires in Texas at this moment but two in particular have left two small towns devastated.
A Montague County Sheriff's Dispatcher confirmed Friday that two people had died when fire engulfed their home. Family members identified the dead couple as former WFAA reporter Matt Quinn and his wife, Cathy. Their son, Chris, was reported in fair condition with burns at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.
The towns of Sunset and Stoneburg in Montague County were also devastated. Several dozen homes were destroyed with only scraps of debris and ashes remaining. The fires that swept through were among a total of approximately 25,000 acres of fires in the county that initiated the evacuations of Montague, Bowie, and Saint Jo about 60 miles Northwest of Fort Worth, Tx.

It's an amazing story - two 98 year-old women were pulled from the rubble by rescuers in the aftermath of the earthquake in central Italy several days ago.
Ines D'Alessandro and Maria D'Antuomo are the luckiest people alive today. Ines had already survived a similar earthquake back in 1915 and lost her two sisters in 1918 when their house collapsed on them. Ines also sympathizes for those who have lost loved ones in this recent earthquake. Maria was buried under the rubble in her bed. She was injured but passed the time by crocheting as she waited for help.
When the fireman arrived and carried her off to safety she had some crackers and combed her hair. God's angels were definitely looking out for them on this day. |
